‘Where are you Megan

Are you in the stars above

Or the waves below…’

His voice was soft as he folded himself down beside her.

‘I would tread the path which puts Scorpio into Venus. But watch for Venus uniting with the fiery sign of Aries!’

She turned to face him. ‘Hello, you. I’m a Scorpio…’

‘Hello, Em. And I’m an Aries! How d’you do.’ He held out his hand. ‘Two sides of the same coin ruled by Mars. Unbreakable bonds.’

She giggled. Wellington flopped down in front of them. They looked up to a canvas of sparkling lights.

‘You seem to know a lot about the stars.’

‘I studied astronomy – a hobby. Wellington knows more, don’t you, boy?’ He ruffled the dog’s fur. ‘Wellington has his name written in the stars. See the W over there?’

Emily turned.

Jon reached for her hand. He interlaced his fingers through hers and guided her into the night sky. A subtle action. A meaningful touch. She wanted him to stay right where he was. His hand felt warm and strong, and as he moved closer, she smelt the salt of the sea in his hair and on his clothes. Emily turned her attention to five bright stars.

‘Cassiopeia is a constellation in the northern sky named after the vain queen Cassiopeia in Greek mythology. It’s one of many constellations and has a distinctive W, although sometimes it looks upside down. First, we need to look for the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper.’ He guided her hand. ‘Then, focus on the point where the handle of the Big Dipper meets its cup.’ He held her forefinger and said: ‘Draw an imaginary line from that point straight through the last star, Polaris, in the handle of the Little Dipper, and that imaginary line will sweep right through Cassiopeia.’

Like the swift action of a brush on canvas, he swept her finger upwards. Emily felt herself shaking. He curled his fingers around her hand to steady her and then released both their hands down to her lap. He stayed there, his fingers caressing hers as he let go. It was an affectionate, slow and sensual movement and reminded Emily of the delicate silk fabric of the kimono, barely touching skin, which made her want to name the action a Japanese touch. She felt the expanse of stars and a shiver ran through her entire body.

‘You’re losing me, Jon.’

‘Am I, Em?’

‘—’

She interrupted their thoughts. ‘You met Timothy?’

‘I did. And… I fed him a strawberry. He’s a grand old fellow. I asked Alice where he came from but she evaded the question.’ He rubbed his chin.

‘She told me someone gave him to her over thirty years ago when the tortoise was about four years old.’

‘A bit older than me then. His wrinkles prove it, of course.’ Jon chuckled. ‘That’s a long time to be together. The little guy obviously means a lot to her.’

Emily turned to side-glance Jon. She wondered how old he was, but it wasn’t easy to compare him to a tortoise, especially in the dark. She giggled when Jon peered at her with a comical grimace.
